After Class 10, many families ask the same question: should my child take Commerce with Maths, or without? There is no single right answer. The right one depends on the child and on where they want to go.
Choose Commerce with Maths if your child enjoys numbers and is comfortable with Class 10 Maths. It keeps more doors open, especially for degrees in economics, statistics, data and finance-related fields.
Choose Commerce without Maths if Maths is a real struggle or a source of stress. A strong score in Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics will serve a child better than a weak score in a fourth subject.
A simple test: ask your child to attempt a few Class 10 Maths questions without help. If they enjoy it or can manage steadily, Maths is worth keeping. If it feels like a battle, listen to that.
Questions to ask before deciding:
What does your child want to study after Class 12? Check the entry rules for those courses, as some require Maths and many do not.
How did your child actually perform in Class 10 Maths, and how did they feel doing it?
Will a fourth subject lower their results in the three core commerce subjects?
One caution. Do not choose Maths only because it sounds more serious, and do not drop it only because a friend did. Look at your child’s ability and their goal.
Whichever you choose, Accountancy and Economics are where early habits matter most in Class 11. A child who learns journal entries and basic economics properly in Class 11 finds Class 12 far easier.
